2012 Irish Hill Climb Championship Results

The results for the Irish Hill Climb Championships can be found here. There is a tab for the Challenge and the Championships itself (Challenge will be up very soon). Congratulations to all riders - the climb is a true test, but especially to the Challenge riders giving this a go - we hope you had a great day. I remember a few folks saying that it was a 'flat' climb, I don't think anyone said that afterwards :)

We would just like to thank everyone who made today such a great success – almost 130 riders (in October!) makes this the best attended Hill Climb Championships I have seen.

Outside of Cycleways CC, many thanks to the extra marshals/timers/starters we got on the day, Tommy for Commissar duties and Joanne in timing. Things ran like clockwork.

We were also lucky to have a fantastic race HQ, the Glendalough Hotel, the venue was perfect and gave us a stunning backdrop. Thanks to the ESB for helping us with access to the top of Turlough hill and Fixx Coffee for organizing hampers for the category winners. I performed a few good weather dances lately, whoever else did so, we thank you too!

Finally, thank you to all the folks who came out and raced – in the end of the day, you guys made the day.

Thanks Glendalough Hotel
Thank you Fixx Coffee

2012 Hill Climb Poster

2012 Hill Climb Registration and Details

Cycleways CC, are holding the 2012 Irish Hill Climb Championships in Glendalough, County Wicklow. We have selected a great course (10km @ 5.2%), a course that is approachable by any rider from commuter/first time racer to pro rider.

We are trying to make this event as inclusive as possible, so on the day, there are two events.

The National Championship Hill Climb Time Trial
To be eligible to become National Champion, you must be Irish (IRL UCI code) and be an A3 rider or higher. A4s and riders that purchase a day-license can race it (and win a prize), but are not eligible to become National Champion.

We will have prizes for the fastest three senior, vet, women and junior riders. Riders are set off individually at 1 minute intervals, first rider off at 10:45am. Signon 9am to 10:30 in the Glendalough Hotel. Start times will be made available the evening before the event.

The Challenge
This is for all riders, racers and non-racers, commuters or pros, you don't need a racing license. Basically, it is the same course as the National Championship course, but ran as a mass start event at 10:00am. If we get big numbers, we will split it into smaller, more manageable groups - there will be nothing daunting about the start! U16 riders (not U14 or younger) are able to take part in the Challenge - not the Championship event.
Signon for this is from 9am to 9:45am.
Everyone will get their time and we may have a few prizes too.

With both races, there will be a car driving to the top of the course shortly before the start that you can give extra clothing for the descent back down. Ask about this at signon

To take part, all riders must register (and pay - €10) online before 8pm, Thursday 4th of October

Online signon is available here.

Results will be online shortly after the event.

2012 Hill Climb Championship Course

For the 2012 Irish Hill Climb Championships, the course will be based out of Glendalough, County Wicklow. At 10 kilometers long, it is the longest hill climb Championship to date in Ireland - over the 10 kilometers, the riders will climb 536 vertical meters.

Without long steep sections, the course is easily accomplishable by any reasonably fit rider - you don't have to be a racer to enjoy this one.

The first segment (6.4 kilometers - the Wicklow Gap), has been used many times in Irish and International races including the Ras and Tour de France.

There is lots of parking available in both Glendalough/Laragh as well as on the top of the Wicklow Gap.

For spectators, it is easy to mark at the top of the Wicklow Gap and see the riders as they pass by on the way to completing the final 3 kilometers.

The Glendalough Hotel are kindly supporting this event and Race HQ will be based from the hotel.

What to expect

Fingers cross the weather is good - these are taken on the course a short while ago.
